South Yorkshire Police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to establish what caused the death of one of their officers in north Wales.

Pc Anthony Mulhall, 42, was found in Snowdonia on Thursday, a day after going missing from his Rotherham home.

He had suffered minor head injuries but died in hospital on Friday after his condition deteriorated, police said.

He was cleared of wrongdoing in January after CCTV film showed him punching a woman as he tried to arrest her.

Pc Mulhall was removed from frontline duties in March 2007 after the footage showed him trying to subdue 21-year-old Toni Comer outside a Sheffield club.

An investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission later decided that no officers should be charged.

Helicopter rescue

Pc Mulhall was reported missing from his home in the village of Braithwell, near Rotherham, on Wednesday.

North Wales Police said his car was found at Nantmor by their officers on Thursday morning.

It was not until the following afternoon that the officer was discovered by a walker at about 1,000ft on Cwm Bychan near Beddgelert.

He was taken by RAF helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor, where he died on Friday afternoon.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The county's Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes paid tribute to the officer, who had served with the force for 11 years.

Mr Hughes said: "This is terrible news and our condolences go out to his family.

"Pc Mulhall was highly regarded and will be missed by all his colleagues and friends."
