Crisis meeting for flood victims
An emergency meeting has been called for residents in one of South Yorkshire's worst flood-hit areas.

People in Catcliffe asked for a public meeting so they could raise concerns about the response to the floods.

But Rotherham Council told residents about the meeting by putting flyers through letter boxes, even though many have been forced from their homes.

The council said it had done all it could to advertise the event and hoped word would get around.

Resident Andy Lambert told the BBC: "I think it's unfair to people who do have concerns that they want to voice.

"They might not be able to attend, and find out about it afterwards when it's too late."

'Community spirit'

The meeting, at St Mary's Church at 1800 BST, was set up to give people the chance to talk to council officers and representatives from other agencies involved in the emergency response to the floods and the on-going clean-up of affected areas.

A spokeswoman for Rotherham Council said: "People did feel they wanted an opportunity to meet with us and ask questions.

"We have been leaflet dropping but we have also put them in flood assistance centres, so they can be seen by people who are dropping in their and might not be at home.

"All local councillors are aware of the meeting so we are hoping people will find out by word of mouth, as there is a huge community spirit going on down there.

"Obviously we accept they we can't reach everyone but we have done everything we could."

Similar meetings will be held at Whiston Junior and Infants School at 1900 BST on Thursday, and at Dinnington Resource Centre at 1800 BST on Friday.

A huge operation to pump water out of Toll Bar, near Doncaster, was completed on Wednesday.

Twenty-five high volume pumps provided by fire and rescue services from around the country were pumping out up to nine million litres of water per hour.
