Ex-pop centre prepares for students
Pop centre
The pop music centre closed due to a lack of visitors
Work has begun to transform the former 15m National Centre for Popular Music into a Students' Union.

The lottery-funded museum in Sheffield closed in 1999 due to low visitor numbers.

It was bought earlier this year for 1.85m by Sheffield Hallam University.

From September, the university will use it to house the new Students' Union, with the School of Cultural Studies relocating into the old Students Union building.

The Students' Union say they plan to run a full programme of events in the former pop centre which will be open for the public to attend.

They also intend to develop a community theatre which could be hired out to groups in the city.
