New town square opens in Taunton

The first phase of a £270m scheme to regenerate the centre of Taunton has been officially opened.

Somerset Square, a new public open space, has been created in the waterfront location in front of the Brewhouse Theatre.

Mark Green of development team Project Taunton said Somerset Square will be followed by work at Castle Green and the town's Cattle Market.

New apartments and a restaurant next to the square are due to be open soon.

The square was opened with a civic ceremony and a performance by the cast of When Santa Fell To Earth, the Brewhouse's Christmas production.
