Police plea to Crimewatch caller

Melanie Road
More than 40 calls were made to detectives following the reconstruction

A woman who called BBC One's Crimewatch programme may have vital information on a murder which happened 25 years ago.

Melanie Road, 17, was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death as she made her way home from a Bath nightclub in the early hours of 9 June 1984.

Det Ch Insp Mike Carter said a woman had called Crimewatch at about 2300 BST on Wednesday after a reconstruction of the crime was broadcast.

Mr Carter said the caller was "not in trouble" and urged her to come forward.

More than 40 calls were made to the programme and some provided new leads for detectives.

During the show officers asked viewers to cast their minds back to 1984 and see if they could remember anyone who appeared with unexplained injuries or left the city suddenly.

Officers believe they have the killer's DNA from the crime scene. The profile does not match anybody on the national database.

"If there was someone acting suspiciously at that time we can check them against our DNA sample," Mr Carter added.
