Plan shapes future of town centre
An action plan to shape the future prosperity of Taunton town centre for the next 20 years is being drawn up by the borough council.

The plan, covering a 50 hectare area, aims to deliver thousands of jobs and homes and improved shopping, leisure, sporting and cultural facilities.

A series of exhibitions are planned to show the details and a public inquiry is scheduled for summer 2008.

Public comments on the plans can be made from 26 October to 6 December.

Taunton Deane Borough Council said the action plan will play a vital role in shaping the future of the town centre, enabling it to keep pace with Taunton's growth and increasing regional importance.

'Vital role'

It said it must also respond to the challenges of competing centres like Exeter, where the new Princesshay shopping centre has just opened.

The plan will help deliver the key Project Taunton regeneration sites, totalling an area of about 50 hectares.

These are:

  • Firepool, including the livestock market and former railway sidings
  • County Cricket Ground and Coal Orchard
  • Sites either side of High Street
  • Castle Green
  • The Tangier area

The action plan is the first part of the council's local development framework, the new-style planning document that will replace the existing local plan.
