Crime figures worst in country
Officers on the beat
Nottinghamshire had a higher rate of violent crime than London
Nottinghamshire has the highest amount of recorded crime in England and Wales, according to the Home Office.

New figures released on Thursday, show nationally there has been a slight increase in the number of violent crimes recorded by police in the year to March 2003.

Figures show the East Midlands has the third highest rate of recorded crime in England and Wales.

But with 159 recorded crimes per 1000 population, Nottinghamshire is singled out as having even higher rates than London which has 152 or Greater Manchester with 153.

"Massive" task

Burglary and vehicle thefts in Nottinghamshire were also higher than the national average, along with levels of worry about those types of crime.

And when people in the county were asked how satisfied they were with police in Nottinghamshire just 38% responded positively, the lowest satisfaction level in England and Wales .

Crime statistics by region and key offences

Nottinghamshire Police acknowledged they had not been pro-active enough but said results of new initiatives were beginning to be seen.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Ditchett said: "We have a massive amount to do and people will only be reassured about crime when they see the results coming through and feel a greater degree of satisfaction."

Slight fall

Lincolnshire has seen the largest increase in violent crimes in the country.

The figures show that more than 9,000 incidents of violence against a person were recorded by the county's police force last year.

That is up 92% per cent.

But Lincolnshire police said the increase is down to a change in the way crimes are recorded and actual incidents have remained largely unchanged.

Overall Lincolnshire had 96 crime per 1,000 people, with Derbyshire recording 108 and Leicestershire 104.

The Home Office says nationally overall crime levels did fall slightly - by 2%.
