Murder accused dies in hospital

A man accused of murdering his mother-in-law in a fire has died in hospital.

Paul Barber, 56, was accused of murdering Mavis Clift, 76, at her home in Kingsthorpe, Northampton in 2008.

Mr Barber, of Coleraine Close, Kingsthorpe, was also accused of the attempted murder of his estranged wife, Susan, and father-in-law, Bill Clift.

Mr Barber, who had Parkinson's Disease, was being held at Woodhill Prison in Milton Keynes but died in Milton Keynes General Hospital at the weekend.

Mrs Clift died of smoke inhalation in the blaze at the house in Washington Street on New Year's Day.

Mrs Barber, 55, who was in the house with Mr and Mrs Clift, suffered burns to a third of her body.

After the fire Mr Barber was arrested at Beachy Head in Sussex.
