Man dies in hospital after attack

A murder inquiry has been opened after a 34-year-old man died from injuries received in an attack.

The victim, not named by police, was assaulted early on Saturday morning in a small parking area behind two pubs in Northampton town centre.

He was found lying on the ground in Chapel Place behind the Penny Whistle and Molly's Bar pubs which front onto Abington Square at about 0245 BST.

An ambulance took him to Northampton General Hospital where he later died.

Police have set up a murder incident room and cordoned off the scene of the attack.

Detectives spent the day making enquiries in the area and are particularly keen to trace two young men seen in the area at the time of the attack.

The first man is described as white, in his early 20s, of thin build with spiked, bleached blonde hair with a black curve running through it.

He was wearing a long-sleeved black T-shirt with a shiny, glittery motif on it.

The second man is also white and aged between 18 and 20.

He is described as having a skinny build and was wearing a light blue long-sleeved buttoned-up shirt, light blue jeans and had a long silver chain around his neck.
