Life term for gay murder teenager
Michael Fardon
Michael Fardon's family reported him missing
A teenager has been jailed for life for killing a 45-year-old gay man after the pair had sex.

James Hyland, 19, killed Michael Fardon with blows to the face and then threw him down a concrete stairwell a week after they met in a Northampton bar.

Hyland pleaded guilty at the town's Crown Court to murdering the factory worker in an alley on 15 July, 2006.

The court heard Hyland lashed out at Mr Fardon while in a state of "confusion about his sexuality".

The court heard both men were seen on CCTV footage leaving a pub in the town before heading into an alley for sex.

Second attack

Hyland, described as a junior discus thrower, admitted knocking out Mr Fardon with blows to the face before tipping his body over railings into a concrete stairwell.

Jailing him for life and imposing a minimum term of 12 years, Judge Charles Wide QC said: "After a sexual encounter you lashed out.

"While he was completely unconscious, utterly unable to defend himself, you tipped him over the rails. You left him there and made no attempt to call for help."

Mr Fardon, from the Moulton area of the town, was killed by fractures to his face and head, a post-mortem examination revealed.

Gregory Purcell, prosecuting: "Mr Hyland, in a state of disgust and confusion about his sexuality, lashed out at Mr Fardon."

William Harbage QC, defending, said Hyland was a "confused young man" who was unsure about his sexuality and who had seen his dreams of joining the RAF dashed by a heart condition.

Hyland was jailed for 16 months, to run concurrently, for attacking a man in the toilets of another gay bar in Northampton, two weeks before he murdered Mr Fardon.
