Medals awarded to a veteran of both world wars have been stolen during a house burglary in North Yorkshire. The five medals, which had belonged to the householder's grandfather, were taken from Haxby Road, York, between Sunday night and 1230 GMT on Monday. Police said the victim was "very upset" about the theft. They appealed for help from the public in tracing the medals. Other items taken from the house included a television, a digital camera, a bicycle and cufflinks. Three of the decorations are World War I campaign medals. One is bronze and star-shaped and bears two crossed swords, another is silver and circular and the third is gold and circular. Also taken was the King Haakon VII's Freedom Cross, which was issued after Norway's liberation in 1945 to Norwegian and Allied military personnel for outstanding services during World War II. The Freedom Cross is made from blue and white enamel with a blue and white striped ribbon. A miniature version of this medal was also taken. Pc Amy Littlejohns of York Police said: "We would appreciate the public's help in trying to find these medals. "They are obviously of great sentimental value to the victim, who is understandably very upset by this incident and would like the medals returned. "If anyone is offered any medals matching the description of the ones stolen, then please don't hesitate to get in touch with the police or Crimestoppers."
