Call to reform Mersey Tunnel toll
Queensway Tunnel
Motorists would still pay a toll of £2.60
Campaigners are calling for Mersey Tunnel tolls to be changed to help ease congestion in the area.

The Mersey Tunnel Users Association (MTUA) wants fares to be collected in just one direction.

Motorists would still pay £2.60 for a return journey but the group claims it would ease rush hour congestion.

It will hand a study to Merseytravel, but the Passenger Transport Authority says it had no observation to make on the plans.

MTUA Chairman Dave Loudon said: "Under our proposals, the toll booths that greet drivers travelling from Liverpool to Wirral would be removed and charges in the other direction would be doubled.

"This is a change that is long-overdue since it would mean drivers of cars, lorries and buses would have a smoother journey in both directions."
