An investigation is under way after part of a main road through a Manchester suburb collpased, leaving a gaping hole.

Motorists in south Manchester are facing delays after a huge hole opened up in the middle of a main road.

A small group of people had gathered to inspect damage to the surface of Barlow Moor Road, Didsbury, when the tarmac gave way, leaving the gaping hole.

The road has been closed in both directions between its junctions with Palatine Road and Wilmslow Road.

Diversions have been put in place, which led to heavy traffic in the area on Wednesday night.

An investigation is under way into what caused the hole, which measures about two metres across.
