Manchester United have the biggest fan base in Britain, with more than a fifth of football fans following them, a survey has said.

Fans of pop star Robbie Williams came in second place and Liverpool Football Club in third.

Fourth and fifth places went to Arsenal and JK Rowling, the survey by hotel company Travelodge said.

Other football clubs to feature in the top 20 were Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Bolton Wanderers.

The Irish pop group U2 was listed in sixth place in the survey of 1,000 people.

The poll showed that 32% classed themselves as sports fans, with three quarters of those specifically following football.

Music had a bigger fanbase overall, with 36% of those asked saying they were music fans.

Surprisingly 0.5% admitted to breaking into a star's hotel room and the same number said they had rooted through a celebrity's waste bins.

The poll also showed 1% have had a tattoo commemorating their obsession and a further 1% have split up with their partner over their idol.
