Drive-thru Dogwash hits the North

Shampoo and blow dry? It's a dog's life...
Putrid pooches could soon be a thing of the past with the installation of Greater Manchester's first ever Dogwash.

The self-service machine aims to make paw prints on the carpet a thing of the past and turn scruffy mutts into contenders for Crufts.

For about 5, dog owners can give their smelly pets a shampoo, condition and blow-dry.

It works in the same way as a jet wash and is tipped to soon be as common as car washes.

The machine - in a petrol station in Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey, Stockport - is the first in the North West and one of six in the country.

Tim Robinson, Dog Wash Sales Manager, said: "They go through a series of buttons and a series of cycles to wash the dog.

'Doggy coiffeur'

"The first one would be the shampoo and conditioner, which sprays that onto the dog and massages it into its coat.

"Then they press the next button when they're ready and that rinses the dog.

"And then they go onto the blow-dry buttons as well and that gives them a proper doggy coiffeur."

The lucky hounds can also get anti-parasite treatments while the machine also disinfects itself automatically after each dog is washed.

The first Dogwash was installed before Christmas 2002 in Kent and had more than 100 people using it in the fist two weeks.

And dog owners who tried the device in Stockport told BBC North West Tonight they were giving it the paws-up.
