Boy dies after falling into dock

A 14-year-old boy has died in hospital despite efforts to rescue after he fell into a dock south-east London.

The boy fell into the water near Surrey Quays at about midday on Saturday and two police officers dived in to try to find him.

He was eventually discovered two hours later by a police diver.

"Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate him both at the scene and on the way to hospital," a London Ambulance Service spokesman said.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "Metropolitan Police officers from the local borough, Marine Support Unit and Dive Squad attended to help in the search for the child.

"Two officers dived in a bid to try to find him but were not successful.

"He was found approximately two hours later by a Met Police diver and rushed to hospital where he later died."

The boy's family has been told.
