New government 'like crossbred dog', says Boris Johnson

Boris backs the new coalition

The mayor of London has likened the coalition between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats to a cross between "a bulldog and a Chihuahua".

Boris Johnson said the new government, led by new Tory Prime Minister David Cameron, would have a "fantastic hybrid vigour".

"It will be a new strong proposition to put to the British people," he added.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg is to be the new deputy PM and Vince Cable will be business secretary.

Power-sharing deal

Mr Johnson said: "You're not adulterating the Conservative brand by adding these Liberal Democrats, you're actually [probably] going to see an improvement.

"Maybe it's possible the British people have done something pretty brilliant.

"I think this new government coalition led by David Cameron will be like a cross breed between a bulldog and a Chihuahua - what I mean is that it [will] have a fantastic hybrid vigour."

The coalition is the first time the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have had a power-sharing deal at Westminster and the first coalition in the UK since World War II.

He added: "I think the process was a very good advertisement for what not to have with proportional representation.

"I don't want to see endless behind the doors coalition building and all the rest of it. But I now think that we have a wonderful government that is full of hope for this country.

"The British people looked at what was on offer, they decided that they didn't want an overwhelming Conservative party or certainly didn't want Gordon Brown again."
