Town criers from across England formed a guard of honour at the funeral of London's town crier Peter Moore.

Mr Moore, who held the role as the city's ambassador for 31 years, was described as the "perfect raconteur".

The 70-year-old died in December at his home in Wandsworth, south London, a day after attending an official event.

Fellow criers rang their bells in his honour as the coffin left St George's Cathedral, Southwark, in a horse-drawn cart for Honor Oak Cemetery.

Sorely missed

Mr Moore suffered a heart attack during the summer but carried on with his duties until his death. He was due to receive a lifetime achievement award during New Year's Day parade.

At the requiem Mr Moore's son Jamie Howard told how his father wore the town crier's uniform with pride.

"It became a part of him. The costume gave him power, it gave him authority, it gave him happiness," he said.

"I can say with all certainty that dad was neither tired of London nor tired of life."

A day before his death Mr Moore had appeared at the Mayor of Southwark's Christmas reception.

Southwark mayor Jeff Hook, who was present at the funeral, said: "He was a really kind and caring person who strived to carry out his official duties even when not enjoying the best of health.

"Peter will be sorely missed at future civic events in Southwark and across London."

Mr Moore, who was brought up in Walsall, in the West Midlands, took up the job of a town crier after he was asked to act the part for an event in the 1970s.
