Snowfall disrupts London travel

Snow has caused travel disruption in outer London, while central London escaped the worst of the weather.

Flights were delayed by up to two hours at City, Gatwick and Heathrow airports but all runways remain open.

Several trains from King's Cross station to Cambridgeshire and Norfolk have been cancelled, but there are no longer major problems on local roads.

More snow and freezing conditions are expected later tonight in London and south-east England.

Southeastern Trains between London, Canterbury, Folkestone, Dover, Ashford and Maidstone have been returning to normal following an earlier suspension of the service.

Eurotunnel suspended

But rail firm First Capital Connect expected further disruption, especially from King's Cross, and advised passengers to check before travelling.

Delays were also reported on the Stansted Express rail service to Stansted airport and the Gatwick Express.

And Eurotunnel passengers services from Folkestone to France were suspended owing to bad weather in northern France.

Most London schools were open, but 10 schools in Harrow, north-west London, were among those that remained closed.

Harrow Council put down 165 tonnes of salt in seven hours across the borough.

The authority's deputy leader Councillor Susan Hall said: "North London was certainly hit by the overnight downfall but, by working in relays, we have kept roads clear and kept our streets safe."
