Arnold Schwarzenegger has been invited to the London Olympics to see how east London has changed since he trained there as a bodybuilder in the 1960s.

Sir Robin Wales, the mayor of Newham, wrote to the "long-time friend of our borough", who lived and trained at Charles Bennett's gym in Forest Gate.

The now governor of California trained for years at Mr Bennett's gym, which is a short distance from the Olympic Park.

Sir Robin said: "We hope he'll be back to rekindle the bond."

Sir Robin wrote: "The reason why I would like you to be in our company is that the vast majority of the Games, some 60%, will be held within Newham - much of it within walking distance of your former training ground in Forest Gate."

Sir Robin, who is still waiting for an answer from the Hollywood star-turned politician, said: "I would be delighted if Arnold Schwarzenegger accepts our invite for him to be our civic guest during the Olympic Games."
