End of the line for railway route

Thameslink should have an entirely new fleet by 2015

Thousands of city commuters are having to change their way into work from Monday when the Farringdon to Moorgate branch line closes after 140 years.

It is to allow work on redevelopment of the route letting people travel north and south through London.

Key work can now begin in earnest on the 5.5bn Thameslink project.

Under the scheme several stations will be revamped and extended. There will eventually be more frequent, longer trains on the Bedford to Brighton line.

There will be major improvements to London Bridge, Farringdon and Blackfriars stations, the latter becoming the first station to span the Thames.

The project includes 3.5bn worth of infrastructure work and the purchase of new rolling stock, providing an entirely new fleet by 2015.

Some 2,000 First Capital Connect rush-hour travellers are expected to be affected by the permanent closure, with some customers being advised to walk the short distance from neighbouring stations.

The train company is advising travellers to check with their train operators before starting out.
