A teenage boy was shot dead in his bedroom after two men forced their way into his home in south-east London.

The 15-year-old victim was shot as he lay in bed at his home in Diamond Street, Peckham, in what police believe was a targeted attack.

His sister, who was also in the house, tried to save him but he died later at King's College Hospital.

Officers from Operation Trident, which investigates gun crime in the black community, are investigating the death.

Police are trying to trace the teenager's next of kin before identifying him. A post-mortem examination is due to take place.

Distressed sister

The suspects are believed to be two men in their late teens or early 20s seen running along nearby Chandler Way.

Police were unable to give further descriptions.

"This does not appear to have been a botched burglary," said Det Supt Gary Richardson who is leading the investigation. "I believe these premises were specifically targeted."

"It is now our job to find out why and exactly who is connected to the house and who the suspects believed they would find inside."

The victim's sister administered first aid before ambulance crews attended the scene.

"We are talking to the sister, but she is understandably very distressed," said Det Supt Richardson. "However we will continue to speak to her to try and find out more detail as to exactly what has happened."

Stabbed to death

The shooting follows two other murders in the area over the weekend.

Chamberlain Igwemba
Police are not linking Mr Igwemba's death with the other killings

On Saturday, a 21-year-old man was stabbed to death in the adjacent road to Diamond Street, Southampton Way.

In the early hours of Sunday, Nigerian national Chamberlain Igwemba, 47, was shot dead and another seriously injured at a flat less than a mile away in Flamborough House, Clayton Road.

"We do not know at this stage if the shooting was pre-meditated or was the result of something happening in the flat," said Det Ch Insp Peter Valentine.

"There could have been a number of people coming and going at the premises."

But police said they were not linking the incidents.
