A police officer honoured after the 7 July bombings has been suspended after being arrested on suspicion of shoplifting.
Pc James Aveling received a commendation after helping free people trapped in the Aldgate Tube station bombing, in which eight people died.
Pc Aveling, who denies the accusation, was arrested last week at WH Smith at Liverpool Street station.
He allegedly left the shop with an unpaid-for book and bottle of water.
A City of London Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a police officer has been arrested on suspicion of theft.
"The officer has been suspended while the investigation continues. He has been released on bail until 1 November."
