Kinks' debut pub awarded honour

The Kinks wrote classics, Waterloo Sunset and You Really Got Me

A north London pub has been recognised for staging the first public performance by founding members of 1960s band the Kinks.

When Ray and Dave Davies played at the Clissold Arms in Muswell Hill in December 1960, they launched one of Britain's most influential rock bands.

A plaque was presented to the landlord by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) on Saturday afternoon.

The presentation was one of 14 to be made as part of National Pubs Week.

The Kinks achieved massive fame with classics including Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me and Lola, and seemed to epitomise Swinging London in the 60s.

Thirty years on, they were back in vogue when they proved to be a major influence on Britpop bands such as Blur and Oasis.
