Southwark to mark Citizens' Day
People in an area of south London will be taking part in the government's first ever Citizens' Day.

Ten people from the borough of Southwark will be trying out traditional pie and mash for the first time as part of the celebrations

There is also a "What makes a good citizen?" contest and banners saying "I Love Peckham" in 48 languages.

The event on Tuesday is part of a initiative to "promote community involvement and active citizenship".

Pie and mash plaque

The message for Citizens' Day, which is also taking place in Birmingham, Hull and Stoke-on-Trent, is "Everyone can make a difference".

As part of the events in Southwark, 10 people will sample traditional London pie and mash for the first time when a blue plaque is unveiled at Manze's Pie & Mash shop in Peckham.

The shop has just won Southwark Council's 2005 blue plaque campaign after securing thousands of votes.

And over 100 Southwark Council staff will be getting their hands dirty by volunteering to improve a nature garden in Southwark Park in partnership with Volunteer Centre Southwark.
