Steel pan bands kick off carnival
Competitors in Panorama 2003
Some steel bands will be up to 75-people strong
Notting Hill Carnival is getting off to a musical start with the annual steel pan band competition on Saturday night.

Ten bands will compete to become this year's Champions of Steel at Panorama 2004 in Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, in Bosworth Road, west London.

The Mangrove Steel Band is hoping to defend the title for the third consecutive year at the event which starts at 1900 BST.

The carnival takes place in Notting Hill on Sunday and Monday.

Panorama has been the traditional opening act for the Notting Hill Carnival for the past 40 years.

The competition is organised by the British Association of Steel bands (BAS) and features bands up to 75-musicians strong.
