A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked in the street outside a London Tube station.
Scotland Yard said the assault happened near Farringdon station in the City soon after midnight.
Police believe the victim was set upon by three men and one may have been wielding an iron bar.
Farringdon station has now been re-opened after being shut while a search was made for evidence.
The man, who has not been named, is in his 30s and from Finsbury Park in north London.
He has undergone surgery for serious head injuries in a London hospital and his wife is by his side.
Police are appealing for any Tube passengers who were in the area at the time and who may have seen the attack or the men running off to come forward.
