Father jailed over child cruelty

A Derbyshire father has been jailed for five years for repeated acts of cruelty against his children.

Terence Eames, 53, of Woodville Road, Hartshorne, was convicted last month of 16 counts of abuse, which included hitting his children around the head.

Leicester Crown Court heard Eames held his son's hand against a hot radiator and locked his children in a room for long periods of time.

He has now been disqualified from working with children for life.

Sentencing took place at Derby Crown Court.

'Virtual prisoners'

The offences happened between 1987 and 2000 when the family lived at different addresses in north west Leicestershire.

Eames was cleared of 10 charges during a two-week trial, including assaulting his then wife.

His ex-wife, who cannot be named, described Eames as a "Jekyll and Hyde" character and a "control freak".

She told the court she and the children were virtual prisoners in their home.

On one occasion Eames hit his daughter, breaking her tooth, the court heard.

He also dangled one son, who was five, over the bannister by his ankles.

The prosecution said he hit another son round both sides of the head to fix his "boss eyes".

Sentencing Eames, Judge Michael Fowler said: "It's clear that you did get satisfaction from controlling your family and the consequence of that was that they were effectively imprisoned.

"For years they were confined without adequate entertainment at times, without adequate food, without adequate sanitation."

The judge said that during the trial the court had heard stories of the boys having to urinate through a crack in a box.

"The circumstances in which these children, young as they were at that time, were confined must have been horrific," he said.

"It sticks in my memory hearing them describe looking out of the window and watching others pass by obviously wishing that they were part of the world that you were keeping them from."
