Officers 'took hours' to respond

An investigation is under way into why it took Leicestershire Police more than two hours to respond to a call from a woman who was later raped.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will look at the circumstances around the 999 call.

A 24-year-old woman rang 999 at 0600 BST on 28 May asking for help and police arrived at 0837 BST.

The woman said she was raped after the call was made. A 28-year-old-man has been charged with rape.

IPCC commissioner Amerdeep Somal said: "Our investigation will examine what actions were taken by Leicestershire Police in the time leading up to this alleged assault and how the concerns raised by the woman in her initial call were handled."
