Planes flying in and out of Nottingham East Midlands Airport have started using new routes.
The change in flight paths has been opposed by some residents in the area worried about night time noise.
But the Civil Aviation Authority gave the Castle Donington site the go-ahead to use the new routes this spring.
It follows an extended consultation with people living in eastern Leicestershire and in the Beeston and Stapleford areas of Nottinghamshire.
Airport officials said the new flight paths are essential for safety reasons and the new routes mean planes will fly over fewer people and at higher altitudes.
Protestors also want the airport to become "designated", giving ministers the power to limit night flights.
