Jail's standards 'deteriorated'
A report has said a Leicestershire prison has "deteriorated significantly" since a previous inspection.

The Home Office report on HMP Gartree, near Market Harborough, criticised race relations, visiting hours, security and training opportunities.

It did, however, find plenty of classes and exercise sessions and praised drug prevention programmes and good relations between staff and officers.

Prison authorities said they would be studying the report closely.

Gartree holds almost 700 prisoners, most serving life sentences.

The report also found there had been a number of worrying incidents, including the withholding of food from a prisoner.

Other criticisms included the shortness of visiting hours, poor security and inadequate work on improving race relations.
