Concert venue faces early closure

Morecambe Dome
The Morecambe Dome was due to be closed in three years time

An entertainment venue that has hosted the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks is to be shut down by Lancaster City council in order to save money.

The authority had planned to close Morecambe Dome in three years, but has brought the date forward as urgent repairs would cost about 500,000.

The closure decision was "regrettable", said Councillor Jane Fletcher.

The central promenade area where the dome is sited is currently undergoing a revamp.

"We had a consultancy report on the repairs that needed to happen with the dome, and the figures we have are for over half a million pounds," said Ms Fletcher.

"When you put that into context that the dome was always going to close under the regeneration deals we have with developers, it didn't seem sensible to spend the 500,000 in order to turn around and close the dome in three years anyway."

She added there were still other concert venues in the coastal resort.
