Police have been granted more time to question two men over the attempted murder of a Lancashire police officer.

Pc Katie Johnson, 29, was shot in the leg by a suspected robber fleeing from a raid at the Hospital Inn in Bamber Bridge early on Monday morning.

A man in his 40s was arrested on Monday and a 37-year-old was arrested hours later after he was found on a railway line near the scene.

Both men are also being questioned on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police said they were both from the Manchester area and were being questioned at a Leyland police station.

Four people were thought to be in the pub when two men wearing balaclavas burst in at about 0815 GMT.

The pub's chef sustained serious head injuries in the attack and was taken to Chorley Hospital for treatment.

Det Supt Neil Hunter refused to comment on suggestions that one member of staff at the pub had a gun put in his mouth.

Pc Johnson, a dog handler for Lancashire Constabulary based in Ormskirk, was one of several officers responding to a 999 call at the pub.

She was treated in hospital for 12 shot wounds to the top of her left leg but was later released.

Police said the offenders also threatened to shoot a second officer, Pc Ian Tinsley, if he made any further steps towards them as they tried to escape from the pub.

Officers have seized two cars they believe are connected with the robbery, a red Vauxhall Vectra, registration N396 RHO, and a silver or white Peugeot 406, registration V778 HOL.

Anyone with information about the cars, or who may have witnessed the robbery, is being asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.
