Legal bid over fire cover fails
Fire engine and crew
Two other stations are facing cuts
A Lancashire fire station will lose one of its engines, despite a court bid to stop the cuts.

Pendle Council has lost its bid for a judicial review into plans to cut an appliance from Barnoldswick station.

Carnforth and Great Harwood fire stations are also affected by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Authority review into emergency cover.

A High Court judge refused the review on the basis that the decision was made with public consultation.

Councillor David Whipp, executive member for resources at Pendle Council, said: "The decision is bitterly disappointing for the many thousands of people dependent on the Barnoldswick fire service. Lives remain at risk."

He said the fire authority's decision was flawed, adding that campaigners had "vowed to fight on".

One of two engines and crews are to be cut at Barnoldswick.

Lancashire's chief fire officer, Peter Holland, said he had "no doubt" that the authority decision was "perfectly sound in law and the right one for the people of Lancashire".

He added: "A great deal of effort and not a little expense was incurred preparing this case for court by both ourselves and Pendle Borough Council.

"Though I am delighted that our review has surmounted this legal test with flying colours, it is, in my view, profoundly regrettable the action was brought in the first place."
