A public consultation has been set up to address the decline of eel populations in Sussex waterways. The Environment Agency has put forward a number of proposals to reverse the decline of eels and their young - known as elvers. Introducing tighter restrictions on fishing for eels is one of the plans being considered. The decline is thought to be caused by a number of factors including fishing and changes to the eels' habitats. Eels in the region have fallen to their lowest level since records began. They are the staple food of bitterns and otters. Anyone can take part in the consultation, which closes in September.
