Prep school closes without notice

Children at a preparatory school in Kent have been left without places for September after the school suddenly announced its closure.

Parent Sarah Whiten said letters about the closure of Westbrook House Preparatory School in Folkestone, were sent out after the end of term.

"We'd had our bills for September and were told our class teachers, so it was a complete shock," she said.

The school has blamed a shortage of pupils and financial losses.

It is funded by Kent businessman, Roger de Haan. His spokesman said it had needed to reach viable pupil numbers by the end of term in order to continue.

"Unfortunately that just didn't happen, and with very heavy heart the governors decided on Wednesday that they would have to not open the school in September," said Trevor Minter.

Another parent, Claire Littlefield, said she was angry at being given no information.

"We've supported this school for years through the different changes - all the parents have - and we're now being completely let down."

'Impossible situation'

Teachers at the school are facing redundancy, but only learnt of the closure one day before the end of term.

Mr Minter said if advance notice had been given that the school was in trouble, it could have "precipitated a situation" which everyone wanted to avoid.

"We were looking for recruitment to add to the numbers which would have kept the school open.

"It was an impossible situation where we couldn't warn people any quicker than we did," he said.
