A Canadian man accused of persuading young girls in England to strip and perform sex acts in front of a webcam has appeared in court.

Mark Gary Bedford, 21, of Glengarry Road in Kingston, Ontario, was arrested in July in a joint police operation.

He was released on conditional bail at the hearing in Kingston, and his case was adjourned until 12 December.

Kent Police expect charges relating to up to 42 young girls from west Kent to be brought against Mr Bedford.

British authorities became involved after a concerned parent contacted police in April.

Mr Bedford was arrested in July in a joint operation between Kent and Canadian police.

'Computer hacking'

The computer sciences student faces 16 charges.

These include four counts of extortion, two counts of communicating with a minor for the purpose of child pornography, and two counts of possessing child pornography.

Mr Bedford is also charged with three counts of making child porn to print and publicise, two counts of distributing and selling it, and one charge each of sexual assault, impersonating with intent and computer hacking.

He has not been charged with any offences in England.

The terms of his conditional bail include being banned from accessing computers and from communicating with complainants.

He was previously granted bail on a 50,000 Canadian dollar (23,600) bond. His parents and brothers are standing surety.
