Jobs created at bacon factories

Most of the new posts will be filled by local people, the company said

New jobs have been created at two bacon processing plants in Scunthorpe.

Key Country Foods has taken on 120 people after its parent company Vion closed a similar factory in Ashton-under-Lyne earlier this month.

The Greater Manchester site's work is being split between the Scunthorpe plants and one in Malton, North Yorks.

Extra equipment has also been installed at the Scunthorpe factories. The new jobs take the total number of people employed there to 700.

Geoff Dobson, Vion's managing director for bacon and park in the UK, said: "Given the current economic climate this is a great boost for Scunthorpe.

"It is also a great testimony to our Scunthorpe employees who have established the town as the leading bacon processor in the UK.

"There is a great atmosphere at the two plants."

Vion said a "vast majority" of the new jobs in Scunthorpe went to local people.

The Ashton-under-Lyne plant closed on 7 August after Vion's review of its operations, following its purchase of the Grampian Country Food Group in 2008.
