Hundreds of people have turned out to welcome troops who have just returned from Afghanistan.

The 2nd Battalion (Worcesters and Foresters), The Mercian Regiment, paraded through Worcester.

It was followed by a public service in the cathedral which more than 400 soldiers were expected to attend.

Candles were lit in the cathedral for five of the battalion's soldiers who were killed in action during the tour of duty.

The soldiers are Pte Jason Williams from Worcester, L/Cpl Kieron Hill from Nottingham, Pte Robbie Laws from Bromsgrove, Pte Gavin Elliott from Workshop and Sgt Michael Lockett MC from Monifieth, Angus.

The Bishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge, said: "We owe our armed forces a great debt of gratitude.

"It is very good for the people of Worcester to be able to express their gratitude in person to the 2nd Battalion the Mercian."
