Flooding has brought misery to thousands of homeowners
The MP for Hereford has welcomed a government report suggesting more money is needed for flood defences.

The report, by the Foresight Flood and Coastal Defence Project, concludes that flooding and erosion is likely to get worse over the next few years.

It calls for several million pounds to be invested around the country.

Liberal Democrat MP Paul Keetch says the report could be good news for Hereford, parts of which have been severely affected by floods.

"This government commissioned report says what the people of Herefordshire have known for a long time," Mr Keetch said.

"The government needs to invest in flood defences, and I believe that Hereford should be top of their list."

Mr Keetch said he had spoken to Floods Minister Elliot Morley about the issue, including taking a local campaign group to meet the minister last December.

He added: "I know that the government is committed to the idea of flood defences for Hereford.

"Now this report is highlighting that need. I will be writing to the minister again to try and ensure that Hereford remains top of his agenda.

"The chaos of recent years has shown that we need to do something to try to save people's homes and I will certainly keep the pressure up on the government."
