Fireman jailed for stabbing teen
The Polash Restaurant in Gloucester
John Trivett turned on a group of diners and a waiter
A firefighter with an online gambling addiction has been jailed for stabbing a teenager at an Indian restaurant.

John Trivett, 40, from Barnwood in Gloucester, stabbed the 16-year-old four times in the head and body following an altercation.

He also turned on a young waiter at the Polash restaurant in Abbeymead, running over him with his car.

Gloucester Crown Court heard the attack stemmed from Trivett's gambling debts, which left him a "walking volcano".

Trivett, who had worked for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service for 16 years, ran up debts of 47,500 playing online poker.

The court was told he had gone to the Polash restaurant to collect a takeaway and, when it was not ready began chatting to the 16-year-old and his friends.

'Kitchen knife'

When he asked Trivett, who was drunk, to leave them alone, he replied: "Are you having a laugh? You're 10 seconds away from a head-butt. You are dancing with the devil."

The court heard he was persuaded to leave and was ushered out of the door, but half-an-hour later returned armed with a five-inch kitchen knife and stabbed the boy.

The teenager tried to get away and Trivett followed him out of the restaurant, pursued by 19-year-old waiter Marif Qureshi.

The court was told that when Mr Qureshi threw a tray at Mr Trivett's windscreen, the man turned on him and drove his car at him.

Mr Qureshi was not seriously hurt.

Lloyd Jenkins, defending, said: "He (Mr Trivett) is not violent per se and this was a moment of madness."

Judge Martin Picton ruled Trivett was a danger to the public and passed an indeterminate sentence which means he will not be freed until an expert panel deems he no longer poses a threat.
