The Queen met cadets at Wyvern Barracks

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have visited a barracks and a chewing gum factory during their visit to Devon. The trip also included a visit to the St Loye's Foundation, where the Queen is patron. The Exeter college gives vocational training to disabled people. The couple attended Wyvern Barracks in Exeter where cadets performed displays. They then moved on to Plymouth's Wrigley factory, meeting staff and schoolchildren. The royal couple's visit to Wyvern barracks was part of celebrations of 150 years of the cadet movement. 'Wrong shoes' Cpl Jess Palfrey, who has been a cadet for four years, was taking part in rock climbing demonstrations on a temporary plastic wall and later met the Queen. Cpl Palfrey said: "I asked her if she wanted to climb the wall and she said, 'I don't think I have got the right shoes on for that'." The royal couple then went to Plymouth where pupils from Woodlands Park and Estover primary schools waved flags as the visitors arrived at the city's Wrigley factory.

The royal couple were shown around a quality room in which different chewing gums were laid out for testing at the plant. Gordon Cook, who has worked at the site for 20 years - and which was officially opened by the Duke in 1972 - said it was "a real honour" for all the staff. "It was a real shock to hear that we were expecting a visit from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh," he said. "We were all a bit nervous but they were both very natural and asked lots of questions about the factory and chewing gum. "I'm not sure they are big chewers, but their grandchildren might be." Wrigley said it was a "proud day" for the plant.
