Mr Steen announced in May he would stand down at the election

The Totnes Conservative Association has selected a shortlist of three people for local voters to select its general election candidate. Last week the Tories announced they would be holding an "open primary" with 69,000 voters being invited to pick Anthony Steen's successor. The candidates are Nick Bye, Sara Randall Johnson and Dr Sarah Wollaston. Mr Bye is Torbay's mayor, Ms Randall Johnson leads East Devon District Council and Dr Wollaston is a GP. When reports of Mr Steen's expenses were made public by the Daily Telegraph, the MP said he would be standing down at the election. The Totnes Association said that postal ballot papers were due to be sent out to constituents on 20 July. The candidates are to set out their stalls and allow people to ask questions during an event on Saturday 25 July at Torbay Leisure Centre, starting at 1030 BST. The results are to be declared on 30 July. The candidates were responsible for their own campaigning, and no other hustings were to be organised other than the open primary event, the association said.
