Museum wins gallery grant
Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery
The museum wants the new gallery to be interactive
A Devon museum has won nearly 80,000 of lottery cash to develop a new natural history and geology gallery.

Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery has been awarded a grant of 79,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help fund the 100,000 project which is expected to be launched in spring 2004.

The new gallery will be aimed at family audiences and will offer a host of interactive features.

It will be a permanent display area but will contain changing "modules", which will allow the museum to change a topic in response to what visitors say they want to see.

After visitors responded to questionnaires in the museum, the first four themes have been chosen for the gallery's opening.

Two of the modules will look extensively at nature, seeing how humans interact with and use nature for food, clothing, housing and technology.

Visitors will be able to explore the gallery using all their senses through hands-on objects, interactive games, a microscope and magnifiers.

South West Heritage Lottery Fund Manager Nerys Watts said: "This project will give many more people the chance to take a closer look at these collections.

"Display areas will inspire adults and children to enjoy the museum experience and develop an interest and understanding of their natural heritage."

Helen Fothergill from the museum said: "We can now get to grips with our most popular gallery, which has huge potential for improvement.

"There are so many wonderful things in the collections that we just don't have the room to display. This new gallery will give us a chance to get some of our natural treasures out for visitors to see.

We hope the new gallery will educate, enthuse and entertain."
