Arrest over school needle attack

A teenage boy has been arrested after students were pricked or scratched with a needle at a Derbyshire school.

A boy brought the hypodermic needle into the John Port secondary school in Etwall on 1 April.

About 10 students were advised to seek medical attention following the incident and had to undergo a series of tests including one for hepatitis B.

The boy was questioned by detectives and later released on police bail. The school is investigating the incident.

'Regular contact'

Parents of students who were thought to have come into contact with the needle were notified on Wednesday.

In a statement head teacher Michael Crane said: "The school has been in regular contact with a number of parents over the past two days to ensure that the health and welfare of their children and our students is safeguarded.

"The chair of governors, the East Midlands Health Protection Agency and the police have been informed about the incident."

He said all parents will be notified of the incident when students return to school on 21 April, following their Easter holidays.
