A Derbyshire family wants an inquiry after their daughter died of menigitis within a day of being seen by her GP.

Lisa Williams, 33, said the NHS did not act quickly enough to save her eight-year-old daughter.

Courtney Guy died on 5 January - a day after her family was told by their family doctor that she had a tummy bug.

But Amber Valley Primary Care Trust said "the actions of the GP were entirely appropriate and in line with good practice".

"I feel the local GP could have acted quicker. The doctor should know the signs and should have acted on the signs," her mother said.

Courtney's 13-year-old brother Kristian had been in hospital in Derby for suspected meningitis a few weeks earlier.

"If there is the slightest doubt, all you have to do is give her an injection of penicillin and it would have done her no harm at all," her stepfather David Williams said.

"I trusted the doctor - he said she had a tummy bug and I trusted him," Mrs Williams said.

Amber Valley Primary Care Trust said it was "deeply sorry about the death of one of our young residents this month from meningitis".

"We are happy that the actions of the GP were entirely appropriate and in line with good practice."

A spokesperson from East Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "EMAS has carried out an interim investigation into the pattern of events on 4 January in response to media enquiries.

"This indicates that we dealt with the requests from the GP appropriately and in accordance with normal protocols."

The family is planning to file a formal complaint and wants an indepedent inquiry into their daughter's death.
