Police hold one-day knife amnesty

Knives handed in
Police said they were pleased that 45 knives were handed in

More than 40 knives have been handed in to police in a one-day amnesty to try to get weapons off the streets.

The amnesty was held in Hillfields in Coventry after a meeting between police and residents following the discovery of several knives in the area.

Bladed weapons were dropped in bins in Village Square or handed to officers without the fear of arrest.

A text line service has also been set up allowing youths to text anonymously with information on knife crime.

'Make a stand'

Insp Suzanne Baker from West Midlands Police said: "We have been delighted with the amazing response to this amnesty from the people of Coventry.

"We have seen a drop in knife crime in the area in recent months and this amnesty was intended to build on that success.

"The feedback my officers got was that people have heard a lot about knife-related crime nationally and wanted to make a stand locally.

"Every knife handed in is one fewer that can be used in crime."

Police were also working with Crimestoppers to encourage young people to report knife crime.
