Ricoh station case is submitted
Ricoh Arena
A railway station was part of the original plan for the Ricoh Arena
The case for building a railway station near Coventry's Ricoh Arena has been made to central government.

A joint business plan has been submitted by the city council and Warwickshire County Council to the Department of Transport.

It claims that it would bring 4.70 in for the local economy for every 1 spent on a new station.

A station was part of the original plan for the 113m arena but plans were rejected by the government.

The Department for Transport has said a station should make twice as much money as invested for it to be value for money.

'Very strong case'

Both councils say the station would improve the service already provided.

Coventry City Council leader Ken Taylor said: "The business plan shows that there is an irrefutable economic case for the building of a new rail station at the Ricoh Arena.

"The new major business, entertainment, community and retail developments have already had a significant effect in turning around some of the most deprived wards.

"But the total benefits cannot be maximised unless this area is served by a totally integrated transport system.

"We believe we have a very strong case and the business plan clearly demonstrates why the station is needed and why it would work."

Warwickshire County Council leader councillor Alan Farnell said: "When the Ricoh was first submitted as a concept the railway station was a part of the proposal - and in my opinion is long overdue."
