Town reviving a 'royal' pageant

The town was decorated with specially-made banners

A Cornish town is reviving a pageant which last took place in 1938.

The first Black Prince Pageant took place at Trematon Castle in Saltash in 1914 and last happened in 1938.

The event was revived to mark the start of the town's annual regatta on Saturday and Fore Street was decorated with specially-made banners.

Part of the procession was the recreation of a ceremony where the Black Prince conferred the ferry rights on the "burghers of Saltashe".

Edward, Prince of Wales, who lived from 1330 to 1376, was known as the Black Prince because he always wore black armour.

He was created Duke of Cornwall in 1337.

He was played by Brian Whipp, decked out in an authentic armour, accompanied by a procession of local children from Saltash voluntary organisations, many in medieval costume.
