Red telephone box wins top prize

Great Shelford kiosk
Primary school pupils have made mannequins to put into the kiosk

A disused telephone box in a village in Cambridgeshire has won top prize in a contest to find new uses for old boxes.

The kiosk at Great Shelford, near Cambridge, was bought in the summer by the parish council for £1 and is now being used as an arts installation.

Pupils at Great Shelford primary school have made mannequins - such as Guy Fawkes and the Inn Keeper in Bethlehem - to put into the kiosk.

The village won £5,000 for being the national winner in the BT competition.

'Range of ideas'

Eileen Bennee, of the parish council, said: "Our kiosk is very much a part of the village and we wanted it to continue to play an important role in village life.

"The box brings a smile to all that see it, and it has become a real talking point.

"It's been fantastic to work with the school and see the imaginative range of ideas for who might be in the box in the future."

John Lumb, general manager of BT Payphones, said judges had been particularly impressed by the use of the kiosk in Great Shelford as it involved the community and the school.

"We also liked the way it will be a constantly changing and evolving project over time," he said.

BT Payphones devised the "adopt a kiosk" scheme in response to requests from councils and people who wanted to keep their red call boxes.

Parish councillor Eileen Bennee said they wanted to make people smile
